This is your first season as club captain. How important is it for Adam Smeir to captain his home-town?
When I was younger and started playing football with the Rabat Depiro Nursery I always had one target combined with dream in my mind. I wanted to play for the senior team of my home-town. I had reached that target 8 years ago. In the beginning of this season I was assigned the role of club captain by our coach and I was honored and very happy with this decision. It’s not an easy task because you have to be the right hand man between the coach and players , but I believe I'm up to it. I had another dream when I was young: Winning major trophies with Rabat Ajax. Until now in the past eight years we have won only two promotions but never finished as Champions. I wish that this year we start lifting some trophies; I know that this will be hard but I believe that with hard work and teamwork we can surely achieve this aim.
Eight years playing with the senior squad under the guidance of six different coaches. Last July, Silvio Vella took over. What were your first impressions of Mr. Vella?
Our coach is doing a very good job. Thanks to his good vision for our club and I am sure that all the players are learning a lot from his experience. He has succeeded as a player and I think he will be successful even as a coach. I wished he joined us before because we would have learnt a lot of things before at a younger age. He is a gentleman on and off the pitch and we all do have big respect towards him.
What’s your verdict on the season so far? We had a good start to this campaign. We are 2nd placed in the league and in the last eight of the knock-out competition so I think we're doing quite fine. We have struggled in the matches against Zejtun and Mgarr but we are again on the right track. We have to keep working so we reach our goals and get promoted and next year will work harder to get promoted to the Premier Division because has been a long time since Rabat Ajax played in the top flight of Maltese football. Many people including myself feel disappointed considering the clubs’ history that Rabat Ajax are playing in 2nd division.
Back to 11 months ago, Justin Felice joined Rabat and this was to be your new partner up front. What’s your view on Justin and what has changed in your game? Justin is a complete striker and an excellent person. I have different characteristics than him and that's why we combine very well in the match. He is a clinical finisher and doesn’t miss a lot of chances that's why I mostly look for him when we are on the attacking end.
Who’s the toughest player to face in training?
All Rabat players are tough to beat and have good quality so it's un-fair to say one or another. But when I'm in the mood none of them can STOP me!! (Laughs)
What do you see as your main strengths as a player? I think my speed and agility to go round defenders and also giving good assists that leads to goals. I try to work harder too on my weaker points so I will be able to improve as a player and to help my team.
What are your interests away from the pitch? In my free time I try to spend it with my family and friends and having a good time.
